This month two of our team are tackling the Spartan 21K Beast. Twenty-one kilometres of obstacles, so it’s not just a long run, but one with a lot of challenges to overcome. Leigh and Joshua have been training hard and are ready to go.
Last year they completed the shorter – 10K – version, so they’re out to test themselves further. And raise money for their chosen charity, Chartwell Children’s Cancer Trust.
So what has this got to do with IT?
It’s all about values.
As the business owner, Leigh has a business coach – as do all enlightened leaders – and a recent session focused on values, which underpin the way EJJB does business.
Every client gets quality
It’s not just about doing the work, it’s much more than that. Every member of the EJJB team signs up to the company values.
Respect: we always remember that the client is trying to run a business and we will go out of our way to minimise the disruption to their business. That can give us a few challenges, particularly when replacing routers for a hotel or airport meant finding a way to do that without them experiencing any internet down time.
Accountability: if anything gets broken during the assignment, the technician is responsible for fixing or replacing it.
Honesty and transparency: no smoke and mirrors, the client gets the situation explained in language they can understand – no technical gobbledegook – just telling it like it is – politely. If we make a mistake we own that mistake and are honest with clients about that.
Quality workmanship: bodging is banned! Every fix and solution must stand the test of long-term usage and deliver a robust service. That extends to ensuring that wiring is tidy and well-organised and that the workspace is kept tidy too.
Giving back to our community: we do this through sponsorship of events and fund-raising – like the Spartan 21K Beast. We’ve sponsored events and are ongoing sponsors of the local Ice Hockey team as well as a grass-roots football team.
Matching values is important, too. Most business owners have had the experience of taking on a client and finding there’s friction at every step. It’s not that anyone is necessarily a ‘difficult’ client or a ‘bad’ supplier, but usually that values just don’t match and that makes both parties uncomfortable.
New challenges
The Above & Beyond Bromley Business Awards (ABBBAs) are now in their fourth year and the EJJB team have been responsible for the audio/visual set-up for the awards dinner in November.
The contract came about because it was the EJJB team that set up Bromley Business Networking group’s hybrid meetings after COVID. Networkers attend in the room, and also via a video link, so members can attend remotely – and those who travel regularly and who are a bit further away often do that. Members have attended from Spain, Germany and Bulgaria!
This experience was invaluable for the ABBBAs and each year the set-up has become more ambitious. And the EJJB technician are taking on more and more responsibility, developing their skills.
Now this expertise has been in demand at other events, recently being responsible for managing a presentation and an interactive Teams meeting with Hanson Robotics humanised AI Robot, Sophia, at Bizcom 2026. Which worked perfectly.
And there’s the final value, that sets EJJB apart: Determination. We won’t be beaten, no matter what, we’ll find a way to make it work.
